Get in the festive mood with Nick J.D. Hodgson

Thus far you probably know Nick J.D. Hodgson best as the drummer in Kaiser Chiefs, but that’s set to change when the musician releases his debut solo album in January. For a sneak insight into what to expect you can download the first two tracks, “Suitable” and “RSVP”, but first of all let Nick curate your Christmas with his festive playlist.

1. Last Christmas - Wham!

This was the first Christmas song I heard this year and it was so poignant. It’s an amazing song anyway. Love the video too, they had a hell of a winter wardrobe!

2. Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas - Michael Bublé

When Bublé's voice comes in it’s like it has been marinating in golden syrup. It’s pure fireside cosiness. I was invited to go see him at Leeds Arena a few Christmases ago. I was dubious to say the least, but what happened during that gig changed my life forever. I’m a fan! He’s also a comedy genius just in case you didn’t know.

3. All I Want For Christmas Is You - Mariah Carey

I heard this for the first time (this year) this morning and it made me feel great. What a tune. I don’t think there’s room for musical snobbery when it comes to Christmas songs. You just have to go with what feels awesome and this certainly does.

4. Stop The Cavalry - Jona Lewie

When I was in Kaiser Chiefs we did a cover of this song for Five Live. If I was to write a Christmas song it would be something like this I’d hope, I’d love to have written this! A lot of the big Christmas bangers are about sadness, loneliness and Christmas yearning. This one is about soldiers unable to return home.

5. Happy Xmas (War Is Over) - John Lennon

Continuing the soldiers yearning theme here, the lyrics “War Is Over…If you want it” is a great message. Plus it’s so anthemic and you can get a real good sway going while listening to this with a few family members!

6. Wonderful Christmastime - Paul McCartney

I love the chords played on a very nice sounding synth. I once learned it on the piano, so many chords but expertly put together by Macca.

7. Fairytale Of New York - The Pogues and Kirsty McColl

I once played this on the piano and sang it with my Mum. A more Christmassy moment you can’t imagine right? Until you get to the rather colourful verse where they start slagging each other off. It got a bit weird then…

8. Christmas Wrapping - The Waitresses

This might be my favourite of all them. A lesson in how to stay cool while being fully Christmas.

9. Frosty The Snowman - The Ronnettes

I always put the Phil Spector, A Christmas Gift For You album on at least once. This is my favourite though, the wall of sound really works on Christmas songs.

10. Driving Home For Christmas - Chris Rea

I’m so cheesy when it comes to Christmas. My favourite lyric is “I take a look at the driver next to me, he’s just the same”, that’s a great image. So cosy!
