Emma Jensen

We have to admit, there’s something about Scandinavian pop music that is captivating – just look at the numerous musical powerhouses from the region, from Robyn to Lykke Li to Zara Larsson. And now there’s another pop princess to add to the mix – meet Emma Jensen. Producer and singer Emma kicked off her career with debut single “Closer” last year and this summer is back with “Rush”, a slice of punchy pop perfection inspired by the 80s. How do you feel your home country of Norway has inspired your music?

I really don't know if and how my home country affects my writing. But I think many of the Norwegian and Scandinavian artists have a certain minimalistic pop sound. We also tend to be very melody-driven. I guess it's in our blood. People speaking Norwegian often sound like people singing, at least that's what I've been told, haha! Also, I'm half Swedish so that’s a decent pop combination, I guess.

Who are the musicians that inspired you while starting out in your career?

John Mayer has been a hero of mine for a long time, and he definitely inspired me to start out in the music business. When I was young I was into everything from Britney Spears, to Avril Lavigne and Destiny’s Child. I also admire artists that make different types of music than I do, like Lorde, Banks and Lana Del Rey. Producers who have inspired me a lot are Cashmere Cat, SOPHIE, Mura Masa, and 40. The world definitely needs more female producers though.

Can you describe your style and tell us who your style icon is?

The answer is no, haha! I cannot really explain my style but I'm really about being comfortable, and I like baggy stuff and sneakers. At the same time I also want to feel cute and sometimes a little more dressed up, who doesn't? What I'm trying to say is that my style varies a lot. If I have to choose one style icon, I would say myself as a child.

I can't lie, I was a swaggy kid!

You can only bring three albums to a deserted island - what do you bring?

‘Continuum' by John Mayer, 'Channel Orange' by Frank Ocean and 'So Sad, So Sexy' by Lykke Li.

What can we expect from your new music?

I’ve been really inspired by 80’s pop lately, so you’ll for sure hear some of those 80’s drums in my new songs. Hopefully I can combine this with some next level musical elements from the future. Stay tuned!

What are your plans for the rest of the year?

I’m spending the summer in the studio, making new music that I'm releasing this fall. But I should also be able to squeeze in some summer adventures. Feel free to join me via my Instagram to see! I also would love to be able to go touring. Performing live and meeting people who listen to my music is the best feeling in the world.
